Understanding Jesus Through Renewing One's Mind

We run into all sorts of problems when we value understanding more than obedience. According to Romans 12:1 & 2, our minds are renewed through submitting to Christ—through no longer submitting to the pattern of this world. It is through this obedience our minds are renewed. Trust and obedience to Christ are the key to understanding the mind of Christ. The child who tries to be kind to someone they don’t like, because they believe Jesus wants them to, is further along in their understanding of Christ than the theologian who values understanding the Bible more than obedience to Christ. Obedience leads to a true understanding. The child who genuinely seeks to do what Christ tells him to will fail again and again; but if, after each failure, prays and asks God for help, then gets up again and sets their heart on doing what Christ asks, will grow closer to God and become more like Jesus. (It is through trust and obedience that the relationship develops.) This is how we are to learn from the Master. This is how our minds are meant to be renewed.

Ever since man ate from the tree of knowledge, men have sought knowledge (power), in an attempt to control. But trusting and obeying—that means being vulnerable—that’s scary.

We need to be willing to consider that many false doctrines have been introduced into the church by well-meaning intelligent men. Such men have persuaded lots of people that “this is what the Bible teaches.” This is how false doctrines spread through the church rapidly and sometimes are not addressed for hundreds of years (for two good examples of this see Adam Finlay’s video on ‘Rewire’ about our righteous deeds being like filthy rags, and Idol Killers video “Todd Friel’s Wretched Defense of PSA”).
